Siding Calculator

Estimate siding material for your whole project — add every wall, subtract its openings, and get one combined material estimate.

Your Walls

Material estimator only. Calculates siding area from dimensions you provide. It does not design wall assemblies, siding installation, flashing, fastening, structural details, or code compliance.

Wall Sections

Add a section for each wall or gable end — front, back, sides, an addition, a garage gable — and give each one its own openings. Everything combines into one siding order.

Advanced options
Package planning

Optional. Siding is packaged differently by product — cartons, bundles, boxes of boards. Enter your product's actual stated coverage; no manufacturer presets are assumed.

ft²/package
Cost estimate

Entirely optional — no price is pre-filled. Material estimate only; excludes labor, delivery, trim, taxes, and other charges.

Area pricing basis

$/ ft²
$

Requires a coverage per package entered above (in Package planning) to produce a package count.

If both an area-basis price and a package price are entered, they're shown as separate alternative estimates for the same siding material — never added together.

Have a separate soffit or eave to plan? Use the Soffit Calculator for soffit material and attic ventilation.

How It's Calculated

Methodology

Enter your wall dimensions to see the formula breakdown.

Assumptions & Accuracy

Wall area uses plain geometry: width × height for a rectangular wall, and (width × wall height to eaves) + (width × gable height ÷ 2) for a gable-end wall. Every wall's area is summed, openings you enter are subtracted, and the material allowance is applied once to the combined project total — never rounded or estimated separately. Optional package coverage and prices use only the values you enter.

Project Guide

How to measure a wall for siding

Measure the width and height of each wall face and add a section for it. For an irregular building outline, add one section per rectangular wall face — the calculator sums their areas automatically before any rounding happens.

How to measure a gable-end wall

A gable-end wall is a rectangle (the wall up to the eave line) plus a triangle (the gable, from the eave line up to the peak) sitting on top of it. Measure the width once, the wall height to eaves for the rectangle, and the gable height — vertical distance from the eave line to the peak — for the triangle. The calculator combines both into one gross area for that wall.

How windows and doors are handled

Add each opening's width, height, and quantity inside its wall using “Add opening.” The calculator multiplies width × height × quantity and subtracts the total from that wall's gross area — a wall can have any number of openings, and a garage door is simply another rectangular opening.

Should I subtract every opening?

This calculator subtracts only the openings you enter. Some estimating methods simplify takeoffs differently, so if your siding product's manufacturer provides project-specific estimating guidance, follow that guidance.

What material allowance means

Material allowance is an editable planning margin for cuts and installation variation, applied once to the combined net project area. CertainTeed's own consumer siding-estimating guidance suggests allowing about 10% extra, which is this calculator's default — adjust it for your product, project complexity, and any specific guidance from your siding's manufacturer.

What a siding square means

A siding square is 100 ft² — a standard siding-industry planning unit. This calculator shows your siding-to-buy figure as a decimal number of squares (for example, 19.25 squares) for easy communication with a supplier or contractor. It does not round that figure up to a whole purchase quantity — use package planning below if your specific product is sold in discrete packages.

How package coverage works

Siding products are packaged differently — cartons, bundles, boxes of boards — and coverage varies by manufacturer and profile. This calculator does not assume a package size for you: enter your product's actual stated coverage per package, and it divides your siding-to-buy figure by that coverage, rounding up to a whole package.

How multiple walls are combined

Add one section per wall or gable end — front, back, sides, an addition, a garage gable. Each wall's net area (gross area minus its own openings) is calculated in full, all walls are added together at full precision, and only then is the material allowance applied once to the combined total. Nothing is rounded wall-by-wall along the way.

Why siding material type is not required

Vinyl, fiber cement, engineered wood, wood, and metal siding all use the same wall-area geometry in this calculator. Product-specific installation, coverage, and accessory requirements vary by manufacturer and profile, which is why the calculator asks for your product's actual package coverage instead of a material-type selector that wouldn't change the underlying math anyway.

What this calculator does not estimate

  • Structural wall design, framing, or sheathing requirements.
  • Weather-resistive barrier, drainage plane, or flashing design.
  • Fastening schedules or wind-load requirements.
  • Starter strip, J-channel, corner trim, or other accessories.
  • Fasteners or house wrap quantity.
  • Soffit or fascia material — see the Soffit Calculator.
  • Labor, tear-off/removal, disposal, delivery, or taxes.
  • Building code or manufacturer installation compliance.

Follow your project drawings, manufacturer installation instructions, and a qualified professional for all of the above — this calculator estimates siding material quantity only.

Siding Calculator vs. Soffit Calculator

Use this calculator for exterior wall siding material. Use the Soffit Calculator for soffit panels and attic ventilation at your eaves — the two are kept separate so neither double-counts or mixes up the other's material.

Worked Examples

Illustrative values only — enter your own project's dimensions above for a real estimate.

Example 01

Single rectangular wall with a window and a door, 10% material allowance.

Inputs

  • Wall: 20 ft × 9 ft
  • Window: 4 ft × 5 ft, quantity 1
  • Door: 3 ft × 7 ft, quantity 1
  • Material allowance: 10%

Calculation

  • Gross area: 20 × 9 = 180 ft²
  • Openings: (4 × 5) + (3 × 7) = 20 + 21 = 41 ft²
  • Net area: 180 − 41 = 139 ft²
  • Siding to buy: 139 × 1.10 = 152.9 ft²
  • Siding squares: 152.9 ÷ 100 = 1.529

Result

152.9 ft² to buy — about 1.53 siding squares.

Practical interpretation

The window and door are subtracted from the wall's gross area before the material allowance is applied — never after.

Example 02

Whole-project example: front wall, back wall, and a gable-end wall, combined into one order.

Inputs

  • Front wall: 30 ft × 9 ft, two 3 ft × 5 ft windows
  • Back wall: 30 ft × 9 ft, one 3 ft × 7 ft door
  • Gable-end wall: 30 ft wide, 9 ft to eaves, 6 ft gable height
  • Material allowance: 10%

Calculation

  • Front wall: (30 × 9) − (2 × 3 × 5) = 270 − 30 = 240 ft²
  • Back wall: (30 × 9) − (3 × 7) = 270 − 21 = 249 ft²
  • Gable-end wall: (30 × 9) + (30 × 6 ÷ 2) = 270 + 90 = 360 ft²
  • Project net area: 240 + 249 + 360 = 849 ft²
  • Siding to buy: 849 × 1.10 = 933.9 ft²
  • Siding squares: 933.9 ÷ 100 = 9.339

Result

933.9 ft² to buy — about 9.34 siding squares — one combined figure for three walls.

Practical interpretation

This is the calculator's main job: combine several different walls, including a gable end, into one siding order instead of adding up separate calculations by hand.

FAQ

How do I calculate how much siding I need?
Add a section for each wall (or gable end), enter its dimensions and any openings, and this calculator sums every wall's net area, applies your material allowance once, and shows the total siding to buy — plus the equivalent number of siding squares.
How many square feet are in a siding square?
100 ft² — a standard siding-industry planning unit, independent of your project's material or unit system.
How do I calculate siding for a gable?
Select Gable-End Wall for that section, then enter the width, the wall height to eaves, and the gable height (eave line to peak). The calculator adds the rectangular portion (width × wall height to eaves) to the triangular portion (width × gable height ÷ 2) automatically.
Do I subtract windows and doors?
This calculator subtracts only the openings you enter — add a window, door, or any other opening to a wall to have its area deducted. If you don't add an opening, it isn't subtracted.
How much extra siding should I buy?
This calculator defaults to a 10% material allowance, based on CertainTeed's consumer siding-estimating guidance. It's fully editable — adjust it for your product and project.
Can I calculate multiple walls?
Yes — add a section for every wall or gable end in your project. The calculator combines all of them into one net area before applying the material allowance once, so you get a single siding order for the whole project.
How do I calculate packages of siding?
Enter your product's actual stated coverage per package in Advanced options, and the calculator divides your siding-to-buy figure by that coverage, rounding up to a whole package. There's no manufacturer preset — coverage varies too much by product to guess.
Does this work for vinyl siding?
Yes — the wall-area geometry is the same regardless of material; enter your vinyl product's actual package coverage if you want package planning.
Does this work for fiber cement siding?
Yes, for the same reason — fiber cement uses the same wall-area geometry. Fiber cement is commonly counted by board/piece rather than carton, so enter your product's stated coverage per package (or per bundle of boards) accordingly.
Does this calculate trim?
No. Starter strip, J-channel, and corner trim quantities depend heavily on your specific product system and layout — this calculator estimates wall siding area only.
Does it include soffit?
No — use the dedicated Soffit Calculator for soffit panels and attic ventilation.
Does it calculate labor?
No. This is a material quantity estimator only — no labor, delivery, or installation cost.
Does it check building codes?
No. This calculator does not evaluate or determine code compliance of any kind.
